Audit a historical text corpus

Preserve source ebooks and licenses, inspect chapter boundaries and make tokenization decisions visible.

Goal and how to run

This lesson assumes basic Python knowledge. Read each method and caption before changing parameters. AI exercises are optional; no AI account is needed for the core workflow. Data lives in notebook metadata, so there is no companion data download. Keep the notebook saved in the active working folder.

Your goal is to understand the research question, execute transparent calculations, check the results, and state the limits of the conclusion.

Data and model boundary

The snapshot retains complete unmodified source ebooks, including their original licenses. Chapter-based analysis uses 61 Pride and Prejudice chapters and 24 Frankenstein chapters; front matter and Frankenstein framing letters are outside this declared scope. English-letter tokenization is a method choice, not a language-neutral definition. Word frequencies, surface-pattern cooccurrence and SVD axes do not independently establish authorial intent, character relationships or sentiment.

Steps

1. Preserve source and inspect boundaries

The complete original ebooks and licenses remain in metadata. Analysis removes only wrappers and declared chapter-layout elements in memory. Repeated chapter labels resolve to the last heading for these two snapshots, excluding Frankenstein’s table-of-contents duplicates. This is not a universal book parser.

In [6] · Python
novels=snapshot("novels");corpus={};chapter_rows=[]
for book in novels["books"]:
 chapters=split_novel_chapters(strip_ebook_wrapper(book["raw_text"]))
 tokens=tokenize_words(" ".join(chapter["text"] for chapter in chapters))
 corpus[book["id"]]={"title":book["title"],"author":book["author"],"chapters":chapters,"tokens":tokens}
 for chapter in chapters:chapter_rows.append({"book_id":book["id"],"book":book["title"],"chapter":chapter["order"],"source_label":chapter["label"],"characters":len(chapter["text"]),"tokens":len(tokenize_words(chapter["text"])),"text":chapter["text"]})
chapter_table=pd.DataFrame(chapter_rows)
assert len(corpus[1342]["chapters"])==61 and len(corpus[84]["chapters"])==24
print(novels["source_notice"])
print("Declared chapter counts:",{b:len(corpus[b]["chapters"]) for b in corpus})
display(chapter_table.drop(columns="text").head(8))
These source ebooks are available free of charge. Complete unmodified source texts and their licenses are included in this snapshot. Project Gutenberg is acknowledged as the transcription source; its name is not used as a course title or endorsement.

6 1342 Pride and Prejudice 7 VII 11263 2000
7 1342 Pride and Prejudice 8 VIII 10993 1936

2. Read chapter sizes

Bars count tokens under the explicit English-letter rule. The number is a computational measure of the processed chapter, not a count of sentences, ideas or narrative importance.

In [7] · Python
fig,ax=plt.subplots(figsize=(10,4))
for book_id,part in chapter_table.groupby("book_id"):ax.plot(part.chapter,part.tokens,"o-",ms=3,label=corpus[book_id]["title"])
ax.set(xlabel="Declared chapter order",ylabel="Processed word tokens",title="Chapter boundaries and unequal text lengths");ax.legend(fontsize=8);plt.tight_layout();plt.show()
Computed figure from this code cell

3. Compare transparent count definitions

Count characters, tokens and distinct normalized types separately. These are not interchangeable denominators. Lowercasing merges case variants; apostrophe handling and illustration removal are visible implementation choices.

In [8] · Python
summary=pd.DataFrame([{ "book":entry["title"],"chapters":len(entry["chapters"]),"word_tokens":len(entry["tokens"]),"word_types":len(set(entry["tokens"]))} for entry in corpus.values()]).set_index("book")
display(summary)
fig,ax=plt.subplots(figsize=(9,4));summary[["word_tokens","word_types"]].plot.bar(ax=ax)

Frankenstein 24 69610 6703

4. Inspect frequent words before interpretation

These are source chapter counts under a simple tokenizer, including function words. Display the ten most common tokens in deterministic count/alphabetical order. High frequency alone is not a theme or sentiment label.

In [9] · Python
fig,axes=plt.subplots(1,2,figsize=(11,4))
for ax,entry in zip(axes,corpus.values()):
 counts=Counter(entry["tokens"]);top=sorted(counts.items(),key=lambda item:(-item[1],item[0]))[:10]

plt.tight_layout();plt.show()
Computed figure from this code cell

5. Reconcile declared scope and export

Verify chapter totals and all count definitions directly. Export boundary labels and processed counts rather than replacing the original ebook. The raw source remains independently recoverable from the embedded snapshot.

In [10] · Python
assert len(chapter_table)==85 and chapter_table.tokens.gt(0).all()
for book_id,entry in corpus.items():assert chapter_table.loc[chapter_table.book_id.eq(book_id),"tokens"].sum()==len(entry["tokens"])

(OUTPUT_DIR/"tokenization.json").write_text(json.dumps({"rule":"lowercase English letters; internal apostrophes retained","illustration_markup":"removed in analysis only","corpus_scope":"substantive numbered chapters only","chapter_counts":{"1342":61,"84":24}},indent=2))

Exercises and reference explanation

  1. Why exclude the duplicate TOC headings?
  2. How would apostrophe/case decisions change counts?

Reference explanation. The snapshots contain repeated headings in front matter. Token rules change the computational unit; original sources remain intact for verification.

Keep a copy before changing parameters. Compare old and new figures and record which inputs, calculations and conclusions changed.

Optional AI coding exercises

Prompt 1

Using re/Counter/NumPy/Pandas/Matplotlib, compare two documented token rules on the same declared chapters.

Prompt 2

With the same packages, export all chapter labels and flag unsupported layouts rather than silently dropping text.

Human acceptance. Chapter totals remain 61 and 24, token sums reconcile and full original/license text stays embedded.

Review the edited source, then manually run affected cells and subsequent checks. Ask the assistant to explain the purpose, packages and data provenance of its changes, and reconcile that explanation with actual output.
